The bag throwing can get the same effect as the KB does. But it can develop your finger strength more (grip strength).

Is Jones technically DDS now? but yea, id rather my money going to the sons of convicts, then anywhere near Renzos, not including Eddie Cummings though, it's amazing he lasted as long as he did, there. I briefly rolled with him once, and then chatted after he got bored subbing me, he seemed a genuinely nice guy.

Cummings seems a great guy and his leglock dvd is a tenth of the price of the stuff the DDS are putting out I think

Imagine the level of conversation with Jones and tonon together ...:)

Jesus, the things top level athletes put up with to get good, I swear danaher probably has dead bodies in his apartment.

On a more local level, Levo comes across on social media as really well, I've always liked the guy anyway, but unlike a lot of the rest of the UK scene, he's really come across well in the current situation.

It least the current situation has made it super obvious that BJJ coaches shouldn't be giving advice outside of their expertise.

Yeah, my instructor has been quiet on the whole subject. Just doing a Facebook live thing every few weeks to check in and say hello and answer some questions mostly bjj related. I've been on the UK BJJ page on facebook and it's getting nasty. I'm less and less inclined to believe that black belts are humble, smart people if it wasn't for the black belts that I know privately.

It's also incredibly suscky about gyms that have started closing down due to lack of help from the government and also no help from landlords.

I've got some friends who swear by kettle bells over every other exercise. I'm just getting started in it though.

Furey and the royal court of exercises I think it was, Hindu squats, press-ups and the bridge, he trained with gotch I think for a few lessons nicked his stuff and made a fortune from it.

All the exercises are already out there, I remember the Pakistani wrestling in Leicester shoot always warming up with it, but he managed to make a fortune from them.

Then went onto the great Gama fitness routine, the farmer burns courses and so on :p:p

I remember when brooks Kubrick ran his old time strongman magazine, furey first wrote for it championing odd object lifting, then strongman training, and then sand bag work but never made any money from them so off to the royal court it was!

If you really want an eye opener look up his secret chiense sexual gong Fu course
He was the original strength marketing expert and everyone else copied him :):p

I heard Turkish getups are a great movement for BJJ.

I used to do they years (decades) ago, can be done with kettle bell or dumbbells.

I was thinking of adding this back into my routine on my next "phase".

I don't think he was the kettle bell guy.

I like kettle bells, but there just one tool.

Raw strength is best created with a barbell, kettle bells are best used to great more muscular endurance.

Most gyms could access grants of up to 25 grand, the issue is some didn't qualify, and in the ones who did, used it as normal income, instead of using it to pay the rent, and getting a job in a supermarket for the duration.

It sucks, but it sucks worse in America where their has been no support at all, which is why all the gym owners are so keen to open up.

People are scared for their income, it's outside of their expertise to understand, and they're used to people paying attention to them. It's a toxic mix.

If you think about it blackbelts have spent a lot of time training and not doing anything else, especially now when people are starting to train younger and younger, add in some survivorship bias, and it's amazing any blackbelts are worth listening to on non bjj subjects, it would be like thing all judo blackbelts must be super intelligent, it's nonsense.

As Deadpool said, they are scared for their income and are out of their comfort zone. This will go on for months if not longer, you have much more chance of seeing traditional classes open before you see combat sports back.

Add to this they are used to having people hanging on their every word on a daily basis, ( the whole bjj nut ridding sub culture thing ) used to seeing their training partners on a daily basis who they see as family and it's a big change for them.

And again as Deadpool put it a lot of the younger newer bjj guys only grew up in this environment and trained 6 or 7 days a week, their view of the world is small and myopic and sometimes their education levels not that high

Yeah. Everyday some guy is making a poll with the variation of "would you go back to training if xyz" and it's like calm down folks. The world has not ended. Clearly some of you need ACTUAL therapy rather than BJJ which essentially a band aid for a broken leg. Stop viewing bjj as therapy. It helps because it's exercise it's not a replacement for fixing your feelings.

So to hijack this thread, what's the deal with maces/clubs, are they like kettle bells, in that they're a specialist tool with a wierd cult following, or is there something more to them?

Pretty much the same as kettle bells, sand bags, rock lifting etc all stuff done by athletes before they had access to readily adjustable weight bars.

They work and have their place, different leverage etc but they are specialist strength exercises really and the question is is it better to build general strength using progressive easily adjustable weighted exercises and then do your sport to make that strength sport specific, or buy expensive fixed weight implements to try to mimic sports exercises?

Worth pointing out that those that swear by maces etc , the Indian, Pakistani and Iranian wrestlers didn't have access to barbells etc u til recently so they made use of what they could make or find
